RhinoWare was successfully installed this past week and staff has been trained on how to implement this door barricade system.  The RhinoWare device can be easily engaged in any lockdown situation, preventing unwanted intrusions.  The device has been proven to withstand several tons of direct sustained force. This device has been approved by Iredell-Statesville Schools and complies with North Carolina laws and statutes governing building standards and fire codes when used in conjunction with lockdown policies.  It is also supported by law enforcement throughout North Carolina. We would like to thank you again for all your support. Thank you so much for making it possible to provide that layer of protection for our Hawks.

Our SIT has an opening.  SIT stands for School Improvement Team.  School Improvement Teams are required by North Carolina law to develop school improvement plans. These plans set goals and allow team members to collaborate on ways to achieve the goals and needs of the school.  The team is made of the principal, representatives of the assistant principals, instructional personnel, instructional support personnel, and teacher assistants assigned to the school building, and parents of children enrolled in the school.  The representatives are elected by their respective groups.   Woodland Heights is looking for 1-2 parent representatives to serve on our team. If you are interested in being considered for this position, please email our bookkeeper Giovana Nino at giovana_nino@iss.k12.nc.us.

As you are doing your winter cleaning, please consider donating to our Makerspace!  We have a box in the front office. We are looking for all sorts of items: Legos, Playdoh, aprons, post-its, hot glue guns, hot glue sticks, fabric, cotton balls, pom poms, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, corks, modeling clay, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, glue, sewing machine, paint brushes, paint, buttons, duct tape, magnets, zip ties, nails, screws, wood pieces, etc.   Basically, anything you think a child could use or re-purpose to create something, we’ll take it! Thank you for your help!

PTO News:

We are excited to start the New Year off with fun activities for our families.  Our big fundraiser in the Spring is Boosterthon. In addition to being an event that raises money for WHE, it also has a character building component and tons of fun and games for students.  The theme this year is Mind Spark Mystery Lab. In addition to this fundraiser, we also have Box Top Collection. Information on these will be forthcoming as the events get closer.

In addition to our fundraising events, we plan family fun nights that our designed to develop our sense of community and allow families to come together in a relaxed setting (some earn money for the school, but that is not the primary intent).  These upcoming events will include Spirit Nights at local restaurants, our Father (or best guy) and Daughter Event, our Mother (or best gal) and son event, as well as Spring Fling. Again, stay tuned for more information as the events get closer.

We have updated the calendar on the WHE website with all scheduled PTO meetings and events.  Please use that as a reference to ensure you are informed !!

PTO Meeting:  As a reminder, we welcome participation in our PTO meetings. Parent ideas and support is what makes the PTO so successful.  Our next PTO meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 8th at 3 pm in the Media Center.  We expect the meeting to last 90 minutes.  Agenda highlights are: planning upcoming Winter and Spring events, brainstorming spending of Boosterthon funds, and a year-to-date financial update.  You may bring your children, but please bring something to keep them occupied.

Box Tops:  Please start gathering your box-tops for collection in mid-February.  We make about $2,500 a year on box tops. It is an easy way to contribute to the school.

Father/Daughter Dance:

Our Father (or best guy)/Daughter Dance will be on Friday, February 1 from 6:30-8:30.  Mark your calendars.  Flyers will be distributed soon.

As always, you can reach the PTO with questions and ideas at

woodlandheightspto@gmail.com.  We are also available to help new families get acclimated.  Please do not hesitate to reach out. If it is a question that we don’t have the answer to, we will work with the school to ensure your questions get addressed. We are excited for a fun-filled 2019!

As always, it is an honor to be partners in your child’s education.  Have a great evening!
