Letter to Parents

  • April 22, 2019

Dear Iredell-Statesville Schools Parents & Guardians,

At a called emergency meeting of the Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education on Thursday, April 18, the teacher Rally in Raleigh scheduled for May 1 was the only item on the agenda.  After hearing from various district administrators and Superintendent Brady Johnson as to the safety of holding school on May 1, the Board voted to make May 1, 2019, a virtual student day.  While faculty and staff will report to work for an optional teacher workday, all students will stay home on May 1.  Students will have until Monday, May 6 to complete the work.  Work must be completed to be counted present for May 1st.  Scheduled field trips will take place, if possible. Students on a scheduled school field trip will not have to complete virtual work to be counted present.

Superintendent Brady Johnson stated that “Due to the number of unfilled substitute positions for May 1, as well as a deficit of approximately 70 bus drivers for May 1, I have advised the board that holding school on May 1 may be unsafe.  As a result, May 1 will be a virtual workday for students, allowing them to complete academic assignments from home.  Since this is the first time that we will implement a virtual day, we will look for feedback from our students, families, and teachers. We are hopeful that virtual days will also be a good option when we have inclement weather in the winter months.”

The goal for May 1, 2019, is to make sure that every student has an academically productive day.  Students will be provided with directions and assignments by their teachers and/or school.  We appreciate your patience as we implement our first virtual day.  Your questions and suggestions are welcome.
