8 Ways to Support Your Dual Immersion Student
This program will launch on the first day of school 2017-2018! We will offer our program to 50 kindergarten students. These seats will be filled on a first come, first served basis. These 50 students will continue the program through fifth grade at Lake Norman Elementary and then through middle and high school. Each year we will offer these 50 seats to our incoming kindergarten students.

A dual language program allows students from two different language backgrounds to receive academic instruction in two languages--English and Spanish. The goal is to develop literacy (read, write and speak) in both languages. This program will begin at Lake Norman Elementary in 2017-2018 and intends to expand to K-5, eventually making up 50% of our classrooms school-wide.
How It Works
For the first year, approximately 90 percent of the core curriculum (reading, writing, math, science, social studies) is taught in Spanish and 10% in English. In the grades following kindergarten, students follow an A/B rotation each day. On A Day the students receive all core academic instruction in Spanish and on B Day the students receive all core academic instruction in English. This results in approximately a 50/50 split of English and Spanish instruction. In the grades following kindergarten, students follow an A/B rotation each day.
Highly qualified, native Spanish speaking teachers will be hired to serve as the Kindergarten classroom teachers. The teacher will be bilingual but instruction in the first year will be done entirely in Spanish. Each Kindergarten classroom will also include a bilingual teacher assistant. In first grade, students will have two teachers. One teacher will be a Spanish speaking teacher for A Day and the B Day teacher will be one of our existing English speaking teachers. Enhancement classes (Art, PE, Music and Computers) will be taught in English by our current staff.
Research shows that students in dual language programs develop strong academic skills in addition to becoming proficient in both languages. Bilingual students have the opportunity to develop a deeper level of proficiency in both English and Spanish. Acquiring a second language enhances cognitive development and problem-solving skills. Bilingual students gain a competitive edge in the workforce and an appreciation of other cultures. Language immersion may sound unrealistic; however, this approach has been highly effective across the country. The results are truly remarkable!
