Education and Teaching Background
I graduated from WSSU in 2002. My major was in K-6 Education and my minor was in Mathematics. I taught middle school in WSFCS from 2003-2009 at Wiley Middle School. I taught math all six years and also taught science and social studies. During my years at Wiley, I taught both 6th and 7th graders with abilities ranging from EC to AG and everyone in between.
In 2009, I was accepted into the NC Principal Fellows program, and took educational leave. I studied for my MSA through ASU. During the 2010-2011 school year, I completed my year-long admin internship at West Forsyth High School. After completing my MSA program, I went back into the classroom at Paisley IB Magnet School where I taught a year of 8th grade math and one quarter of 7th grade math and science.
I came to I-SS as an AP at SHS in October of 2013. While I enjoyed being a Greyhound for two years, I was excited to come back to middle school...I feel like I am home! As everyone knows in education, it takes a certain type of educator to work with and love middle schoolers, and well, I must fit the type! :)
I am married and have two girls. My oldest, Lauren, is a student at UNCG. My youngest, Haley, will graduate from high school in 2020. My husband, Robin, works at Timco in Greensboro. We have no pets, but I would LOVE to have a Bulldog one day! For now, I will settle for 400+ of them at SMS!
My Hope for SMS
Research suggests that it is in middle school when students decide if they will complete their education through high school. It is my hope that during my tenure at SMS, I can help students to understand the importance of their education and help them to make better decisions with their future in mind. I bring high expectations of students and staff alike. Since my teaching and admin background is in schools similar in demographics to SMS, I know that if we set the standards high, our students will reach them. For this reason, I maintain the expectation that everyone (faculty and staff, students, parents, and community members) will do all it takes to help the students of SMS succeed.
