• Welcome to First Grade at Troutman Elementary School!  First Grade is a journey into a world of new horizons.  Join us as we embark on fun experiences in both academic and social learning.  We hope to make your child’s first grade experience a fun and exciting one!

In First Grade, we expand on our literacy knowledge from Kindergarten in 2 main ways.  First, we use the Letterland Reading Program.  Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling.  The Letterland characters transform plain black letter shapes into child-friendly pictograms and they all live in an imaginary place called Letterland. Second, we incorporate the Daily 5 Program.  The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing and working independently.  Students select from five reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring.  These choices include:  1) Read to Self, 2) Work on Writing, 3) Read to Someone, 4) Listen to Reading and 5) Word Work.

In math, we utilize the EnVision Math program.  This program engages your child as it strengthens their understanding of math.  EnVision uses problem based, interactive and visual learning to deepen understanding of concepts.  It incorporates bar diagram visual tools to help students be better problem solvers, and it provides data-driven differentiated instruction to ensure success for every student.

Your child’s core curriculum of reading, writing and math is enhanced with lessons in both Social Studies and Science weekly.  We learn about the world around us and how we fit into that world.  All First Grades visit enhancement classes daily.  These six classes include: library, computers, art, music and PE.

First Graders progress with computer programs that began in their Kindergarten year.  We continue to use Istation for reading as well as Moby Max for math and reading.  Accelerated Reader is a computer program that the kids are very excited about!  “AR” helps teachers manage and monitor your child’s independent reading practice.  Your child picks a book at his or her own level and reads it at their own pace.  When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer.  (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) Children using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them.  This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

We thank you for being a partner in your child’s education.  Working together, we can watch your child soar to new heights!
