Web
pages are written in a language known as HTML, Hypertext Mark up Language.
A browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator) reads this language
and displays it on your computer. Learning HTML can be time consuming.
An easy way to see HTML is to open Netscape Communicator, click on “View”
and select “Page Source.”
It
is possible to use Netscape Communicator or other WYSIWYG (What You See
Is What You Get) programs to create a web page without knowledge of HTML.
If you can use a word processor, you can create a web page. There
are many commercial WYSIWYG programs available.
These
include Adobe PageMill, Microsoft Front Page, and Claris Home Page.
All of these programs are available in Mac and Windows platforms but they
are not free. Front Page may be on Office 2000 depending on the version
you purchase.
Netscape
Communicator comes with a free WYSIWYG editor for web pages. Commercial
products provide a few more features and little more power. All have their
own look and feel, however they all work basically alike. Several
of them have demo versions that can be downloaded from the Internet.
First
of all, create a folder on your desktop. When your webpage is ready
to be uploaded, check with your school webmaster about your school’s procedure
for housing your files, etc.
For tips on webpage design go to School
Web Site Resources.
Reminder: ALL OF YOUR PAGES, GRAPHICS, SOUNDS, ETC. MUST BE IN THE SAME FOLDER OR THEY WILL NOT APPEAR ON YOUR WEBPAGE. USE SHORT FILE NAMES
WITH NO SPACES WHEN YOU NAME YOUR FILES, GRAPHICS, ETC. THIS IS VERY
IMPORTANT, MAKE IT SHORT AND SWEET!!!
