Introduction

This lesson was developed as part of the Iredell-Statesville Schools WebQuest training in July 2000.

This lesson focuses on healthy eating habits.  It allows the students to work as detectives and figure out
the lessons(adventures).

Learners

This WebQuest correlates with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and integrates goals and objectives for the kindergarten curricula areas:  Healthful Living,  Computer/Technology Skills, and Guidance Curriculum.  It can easily be adapted to additional grades and subjects.  In order to complete
this WebQuest, students will need teacher guidance.

Curriculum Standards

This WebQuest will address the following Standards:

Healthful Living  - 5.2 Naming and categorizing foods.5.3 Identifying health promoting foods.

Computer/Technology Skills- 1.1 Identify the computer as a machine that helps people work and play. (SI) 1.3 Demonstrate respect for the work of others. (SI)1.4 Demonstrate correct care and use of computers.
(SI) 2.2 Place the cursor at a specified location.(KU/WP/DTP)

Guidance Curriculum-3.1 Learn the rules for participating in group discussion.3.2 Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of following rules for group discussion.3.3 Learn effective listening skills.3.4 Recognize the importance of working together in a group.

Process

Students will be divided into groups of four or five.  From here the Process will be determined by your unique situation ( ie., access to a lab or classroom computer).  The teacher will need to work through the adventures with the students in order to instruct them on how to navigate through the programs. Most of the projects will need to be teacher directed.  Students will then have time to navigate through the programs on their own during center time, in groups of two.  Students will then create a poster to share their information with the other members of their group.

In their groups, with teacher help, the students will complete Bananarama Question Time, Truck Story Time, and
the Eat Right Food Pyramid.

Evaluation

Individual team members will be evaluated by how well they answer the questions, gather information, and share with their team (see: rubric). You may want to print the rubric out ahead of time for students to refer to as they complete the WebQuest.

Conclusion

Your detective team should now know what good eating habits are and if you practice them or not.

Like good dectectives who follow their adventures through to the end, good eating habits will follow you throughout your lifetime. An exceptional detective always gets paid for his work.
