December 2005

Wrestling Takes First in Indian Classic
[12.3.2005] The Viking wrestling team received 1st place in team scores, winning the Indian Classic. Seniors Travis Greer, Matthew Murdock, & David Wiles, and juniors Pedro Martinez & Josh Miller were in the individual finals. Murdock and Wiles both won first place. "The future is looking bright for the team," said Murdock. "Now it's time to do something in states." – Ashley Blood

Viking Girls Fall to Greyhounds
[12.9.2005] On December 9, 2005 the Statesville Greyhounds traveled to South Iredell to pull off a win, 62-48. "In order for us to improve as a team, we must eliminate our turnovers," explained head coach Bradley Gabriel. Key players for the Vikings were Tish McCombs and Mallory Reid. Gabriel commented that the Vikings had good contribution from the bench. –Sarah Montgomery

Men's Basketball Yields to Greyhounds
[12.9.2005] Senior Maurice McKee's nine points led South Iredell in a 44-30 home loss to the Statesville Greyhounds in men's basketball. Titus Summers scored a game high of 17 points in the Greyhounds Victory. Despite a hip injury from football, sophomore Anthony Thwaites scored six points for the Vikings. – Chris Shepherd

Snow Makeup Days Announced
Makeup days for the snow days on December 15-16 have been announced. School will be in session on January 23 and February 20. Please make changes to your calendar accordingly.

Cadets' Work Paying Off
[1.2.2006] The JROTC at has been busy this first semester here at South. Recently the rifle team participated in a rifle match, and claimed second place out of sixteen teams. Members of the rifle team include Brad Heath, Jon Stephenson, Miles Arnette, Robert Cornelius and Brandon Best. The ROTC also participated in a district inspection on December 14th. –Katelyn Clontz

SAT Practice Sessions Available in Library
[1.2.2006] There is more going on than just books and silence in the SIHS Media Center. The upcoming SAT practice sessions, held twice a month, will be very valuable to students preparing to take the test. Inconveniences do arise, however, so students are encouraged to take shortened practices of certain sections either before or after school, or during their lunch. – Marty Folliard

Pappa's Pizza Night Fundraiser
[12.14.2005] Pappa's Pizza is holding a fundraising night for SIHS this Thursday, December 15. Ten percent of all proceeds at the restaurant will be donated to the SIHS Parent Teacher Organization. Support the Vikings!

Progress Reports Delayed
[12.07.2005] Progress Reports have been delayed until Thursday, December 8, 2005.

SIHS Vocats Teachers Best in State
[12.07.2005] Mark London and Jim Williams recently found out that their Vocats scores were within the top five in the state. South Iredell High also had high marks in the district.

NC Report Cards Sent Home
[12.07.2005] The annual state report card for SIHS went home this week with students. Among the celebrations for South was a high percent in students at or above grade level, smaller class sizes, and higher attendance. View the complete report card online.

Volleyball Ends Season with Awards Banquet
[11.19.2005] The Volleyball program recently held its Awards Banquet at the SIHS cafeteria. Several team members received awards, including: All Conference -- Emily Watts (also Player of the Year for the
conference), Mallory Reid, and Tiffany Whiting;
JV Team Awards -- MVP (Offense) - Jordan Beaver; Most Improved - Chanda

Bradshaw Voted Coach of the Year
[11.19.2005] After going into the playoffs and keeping a near undefeated record, not to mention playing flawlessly through the new conference, Coach Meaghann Bradshaw was selected Coach of the Year by the Southern Piedmont Conference. This is her third year of coaching with the Vikings.

Vikings Open Basketball Season Friday
With football and soccer seasons officially over, it's time for winter sports at South Iredell High, and what better way to start off than with great action on the hardwood! Men's and women's basketball schedules are now online, so you can keep up with every game--always check out http://athletics.vikingspirit.com for all the latest news, pics, and information. Though the Vikings won't host their first home match until December 2, follow the team to North Iredell High in Olin this Friday to catch the first game of the season. Tipoff is at 6:30 pm. Go Vikings!

Faculty Top Students in Basketball Game
[11.15.2005] The atmosphere was hot...the basketball was not. Still, the faculty held off the students 67-55 in Tuesday night's Student / Faculty basketball game in the SI gym. Coach Brad Gabriel led the staff in points for the evening, but Greg Crowley's slide, John Jolly's back flip, and James Hogan's field goal were not to be missed.

The Ground Zero Club Premier
[11.15.2005] With a nuclear missile heading straight for New York City, and no escape possible, an unlikely group of residents meets atop the Empire State Building in this ironic tale directed by James Cutlip. Randy Shumaker and Ashlee Wagner lead the play, which takes new meaning in a post 9/11 world. The show opens Wednesday night and runs Thursday evening also. Showtime is at 7:30 pm on both nights, and tickets are $3.00 each.

Soccer Wins, Advances to Third Round Playoffs
[11.6.2005] The men's soccer club scored a significant win Saturday night in second round playoffs against Monroe High School, winning 5-1. Mario Gonzalez scored three of the team's goals, along with Russ Leaptrot and Chris Laws, who both scored a goal each. Senior Daniel Crowley had two assists for the night. The game was arguably one of the team's best of the year and gives them another home field advantage as they host Lenoir-Hibriten this Wednesday in third round playoffs. The game starts at 7pm. Though these two teams have already met once this season, at the West Soccer Jamboree, the rivalry between South and Lenoir-Hibriten runs back to the 1989 playoffs, when South High's men's soccer team beat them to win the State Championship.

Vikings' Winning Streak Ends; Football Travels to Owen
[11.6.2005] The Vikings lost their last home game of the regular season to East Lincoln Friday, falling 35-0 in the last conference game that left them 3-3 in conference play, 5-6 overall. This week they travel to Owen High School in Black Mountain, NC for first round playoffs.

Haunted School Great Success
[10.30.2005] English classes are scary enough, but imagine the school filled with grusome ghosts of all kinds, and you've got the second annual Haunted School. The event, sponsored by SAP, spooked about 650 participants in its one night only haunt night. Everything ran smoothly, and no doubt plans are already in place for next year's event.

Three Wins and Counting for Varsity Football
[10.30.2005] The Vikings dominated once more Friday night in their third consecutive win against conference team Bessemer City. The final score was 28-7. The win brings the Vikings to a 5-5 record overall and 3-2 in conference play. Scoring for the team were Travis Greer, William Marion (who scored twice), and Anthony Thwaites. The squad will host its final matchup of the season this Friday against East Lincoln.

Report Cards Go Home
[10.30.2005] Nine weeks have come and gone, and it's time for report cards. They'll be issued to students on Thursday during homeroom.

Volleyball Sweeps Forest Hills, Advances to Second Round Playoffs
[10.26.2005] South Iredell rolled into the second round of the 2A state playoffs on Tuesday with a 3-0 sweep of Forest Hills. The Vikings (18-6) won by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-10. Tiffany Whiting had 10 kills and four aces in the victory. South was also paced by Emily Watts, who had 21 assists, Mallory Reid, who had eight kills and three aces, and Jordan Wilson, who had 12 digs. On Thursday, the Vikings will travel to face West Davidson (21-7), a 3-0 winner Tuesday over West Caldwell. reported from the Statesville Record and Landmark.

No Volleyball Conference Championship, but State Tourney Next
[10.23.2005] The Lady Vikings might have missed the conference championship 3-2 to East Lincoln, but their sights are already set on first round playoffs for the state championships. The varsity squad will host the first game at South on Tuesday night, with the action starting at 6:30 pm. Come out and support the Vikings!

Blood Drive Exceeds Expectations
[10.23.2005] The recent blood drive at SIHS produced 91 productive units, 11 more than the original goal. There were 58 first time donors. Mrs. Green, Health Occupations teacher, thanked all for their support. Thank YOU, Mrs. Green.

Volleyball Number 1 in Conference, Tourney Next Goal
[10.16.2005] The womens Varsity Volleyball squad, undefeated and number one in conference play, goes on this week to take a shot at pulling down the conference championship. They will most likely face Bessemer City at home. More information to come.

Vikings Shut Out Cherryville
[10.16.2005] The Vikings fought hard for a road win against Cherryville Friday night, and they carried most of it on the back of South's running game. Anthony Thwaites ran for 228 yards to help South win 36-0, pulling the Vikings 2-2 in the conference.

Football Pulls a Wet One on North Lincoln
[10.11.2005] Using the rain to their advantage, the Viking defense effectively stopped the North Lincoln passing gain, helping the team hold out for a 14-0 conference win. The win puts the Vikings 1-2 in their conference. This week they'll travel to Cherryville.

Undefeated Volleyball Hosts Senior Night
[10.11.2005] The Varsity Women's Volleyball team, which is currently undefeated in conference play, is hosting its senior night Thursday, October 13, at 5:30. They will play East Lincoln in a conference match.

Football Drops to 0-2 in Conference
[10.03.2005] Varsity football lost to conference team West Lincoln on a last minute score. The final score was 8-6.

FBLA Sponsors Breast Cancer Awareness Day
[10.03.2005] FBLA is sponsoring blue jeans days in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Day and March of Dimes Blue Jeans For Babies Day. Staff members are encouraged to donate $10 to FBLA for both causes, and as a reward, they may wear blue jeans on certain days.

Haunted School Returning to SIHS
[10.03.2005] Beware the ghosts of the Vikings! South Iredell will again be haunted this October 29th, featuring all new scares from last year. Tours of the school will run from 7pm until midnight. Cost is $8 per person. Proceeds support PEER/Path mentors and SAP Core team.

Progress Report Date Changes
[ 09.26.2005] Due to technical difficulties at the state level, the school system has delayed issuing progress reports until Thursday, September 29th.

Women's Volleyball Ranked Number 1 in Conference
[09.24.2005] After last Tuesday's victory over East Lincoln, the Viking Volleyball team was ranked number one in the Southern Piedmont Conference, where they are currently undefeated. This Tuesday the Vikings will host West Lincoln at home.

South Students Help out Hurricane Victims [09.24.2005]
The CYC club at South recently put together a fund raiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina, collecting $2273.52 to help relief efforts. Ms. Lundy's third period class collected over $500, and will receive a piza party to reward their efforts.

Homecoming 2005 [09.17.2005]
South Iredell is alive with spirit this week as students celebrate Homecoming week. The week kicks off with the annual junior/senior Powder Puff Football game and continues with special dress-up days, all culminating with Friday night's Homecoming Game against Lincolnton, the Homecoming Queen, and the Homecoming Dance.

Vikings Down Statesville [09.09.2005]
In a breathtaking overtime thriller, the varsity football team conquered Statesville to win 21-14. After a quick two touchdown lead in the first half, the Vikings fought to keep the game tied at 14 in the second half, and held off the Greyhounds in overtime. More info coming soon.

Magazine Fundraiser Begins [09.07.2005]
The Prom fall fundraiser is in full motion--juniors will begin selling magazine subscriptions to help pay for the junior/senior prom. The sale will run until September 28th. See Ms. Rich for more information.

Two Matches Cancelled
[09.05.2005] The 9/5 men's soccer match versus Lexington has been cancelled. Also, the women's volleyball away game at West Iredell (9/7) has been cancelled.

Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts [09.05.2005]
Iredell Statesville Schools are coordinating efforts with the American Red Cross to help collect money and supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina. For more information, visit the ISS info page.

Varsity Football Drops to West Iredell
[09.02.2005] After a monumental win against Lake Norman at the home opener last week, the Viking football squad lost a close game to West Iredell. They didn't go without a fight, though; neither team scored during the first half. The final score was 13-6.

Vikings Beat Lake Norman in Varsity Football Home Opener [08.27.2005] Putting last year's losing record behind them, the varsity football team held on to a 12-7 victory over rival Lake Norman in their first home match of the season. "There's been some adversity," new coach J.K. Adkins said afterwards, "and getting this first win was important." The team opened the scoring with Chris Sheperd's pass to E.J. Nesbit, and Travis Greer sealed the game with the second touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The Vikings face West Iredell this Friday.

Freshman Open House Planned [08.23.2005]
While South is working towards gaining a Freshmen Academy, the school is currently instituting a "Freshmen Focus." The incoming class will have a dedicated administrator, Mrs. Eller, and a dedicated guidance counselor, Ms. Brown. In addition to the faculty focus, freshmen will also have daily planners to help them keep up with work.

Freshman Open House Planned [07.29.2005]
SIHS will offer freshmen a unique opportunity to have the school to themselves on August 22, 2005 between the hours of 2:00pm and 5:00pm.The Freshmen Open House gives rising 9th grades an opportunity to tour the school, meet teachers, and gather orientation without the added pressures of being the new kids on the block. Regular Open House for grades 9-12 will take place August 22, 2005 from 5:00pm till 8:00pm.

Band Camp Dates Announced
The band camp will run from August 8 until August 12, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. There will be several percussion and flag mini camps on the following dates: August 4-5, August 8-12, and August 15-16. Each of the mini camps will run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. [links]

Summer Reading for English Classes
While the summer reading program for honors and academic English classes has been temporarily suspended, the English department has a list of recommended reading for all students taking English classes. [summer reading list]

Hoover Named TOY for 2005-2006
Math teacher Lynn Hoover was named the '05-'06 Teacher of the Year for South Iredell. Mrs. Hoover is a veteran math teacher at South.

Drama Club Meeting
There will be an informational meeting for the Drama Club on August 29 in Mr. Cutlip's room.
