Academics Mrs.
Paula Troutman’s 3rd block Apparel II class is working hard on their
semester project titled “Designer’s Closet”. The project promotes a key
part of the curriculum which requires students to conduct themselves as if they
own their own store that manufactures clothing and other accessories. “It
[Designer’s Closet] helps us learn to manage our own business.” senior Crystal
Ogden said. The items range from
purses to pillows, scarves and hats to pajama bottoms, and prices vary among
the items. All proceeds benefit the C.T.E program and help towards the
purchasing of classroom materials.
Anyone interested in purchasing items from the Designer’s Closet can
contact Mrs. Troutman in room B-113.
“The basis of the project is to get
seniors to be able to respond to issues of the public that aren’t usually
talked about,” In her project, senior Katherine Wiles is
researching the topic of abortion, which she chose because it is one to the hot
topics in the presidential election. Other topics that some of the students are
working on are domestic violence, alternative fuel, the relationship between
music and violence, troops withdrawn from In this project, the students will have to do a
five-minute presentation that will include four sources, fact data, an outline
of their project and a poster with visuals. -DB <> John Daniel’s classes have had the opportunity not many classes get. After visiting the North Carolina Historical
Society’s website, Daniel found a way to get World War II memorabilia here to
South Iredell. Various items were sent to
South in a Rubbermaid container, including flags and scrapbooks, ration kits,
cigarettes, and matches. The classes held discussions
about the objects and many J.R.O.T.C students were interested in the items. “These items are a valuable
resource provided by the North Carolina Historical Society and should be more
widely used by schools,” Daniel said. -AM
[05.15.07] These past few weeks, Masonry 1 has learned how to make their own Adobe bricks, which resemble those first made by the Egyptians. The bricks are bonded together only mud and straw, then set in the sun to dry. The Masonry 1 students realized the one major downfall to the Adobe bricks: they are easily eroded away by the rain. Masonry Instructor Mr. Blake Reep also headed another project to improve the school by assigning his Masonry 3 class to lay stone on the sign in front of the school. “Masonry 3 is continually looking for ways to improve the appearance of the school, which can be done with more than just brick work, but stone laying as well,” said Reep. –AA [05.15.07] Mrs. Paula Troutman’s First Block Apparel 1 class finished preparing the bandannas to be sent to Iraq. A total of 106 bandannas were made in the requested color of solid black. They had to make many different sizes to fit every size head, which turned out to be the most difficult part of this project. Troutman and class found a simple solution to this problem by testing the bandannas on the heads of many teachers at the school. A representative from the Red Cross, Lori McDaniels, is coming this week to pick up the bandannas and deliver them to the troops, including her son who is serving in Iraq. – AA [05.15.07] The AP English 4 Class is in preparation for their Final Exam, which will be taken next Thursday, May 10. A member of the class, Caleb Sherril said, “The exam’s going to be tough, but I think Mr. Stewart prepared us well.” The Seniors’ anxiety continues to rise, as the day for their last High School English exam creeps closer!—BS

The students are also to make a Web Page for the Author of their chosen poem. A member of the class, junior Kristian Belk said, “It’s a very different way of learning which provides better comprehension of the poem.” --BS [04.30.07] Mrs. Paula Troutman's first period Apparel class has found ways to take what they have learned and give back to the community. The class is making bandannas for soldiers stationed in Iraq. "It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to provide assistance to the men and women serving in Iraq," said Troutman. The class is also making pet vests for the adoption program at the Humane Society.—AA [04.30.07] Ms. Jacqueline Carnduff is Technical 1 Math is working on a project the connects them to the fundamentals of Algebra and will the discover the origins of Algebra. The students work individual and there are five parts using levels of blooms taxonomy including discovery, and mastery. “The students will achieve, and will gain basis for Algebra” says Mrs. Jacqueline Carnduff.—ST [04.30.07] Mr. James Hogan’s A.P. English 3 Class recently wrote a screenplay adaptation of Twain’s, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The point of the assignment was to adapt Huck Finn into a contemporary story. The students rewrote the story, replacing Huck as a runaway foster child, and Jim, another character, as an immigrant fugitive hiding out from the I.N.S. Out of the many assignments the A.P. students are given, this one in particular they enjoyed, being able to transform their own ideas into an older story. --BS [04.30.07] This fall, students took the Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry E.O.C. The percentage of passing students is currently 61.6% for the Algebra II E.O.C. Sophomore Shaneice Williams said, “I thought it was very easy, and I felt very prepared for the test.” Nicole Turner, a student who also took the Algebra II E.O.C. said, “It was very hard. What we learned was not on there. And I also forgot how to use the calculator for some stuff.” The percentage of students passing the Geometry test is 89.8%. “ I did very good considering I was failing the class in he beginning of the year. It was easy because I went to all the EOC reviews and that helped out a lot.” Said sophomore Samone Henderson. ST [04.30.07] The Career and Tech Department administered the Accuplacer Test last week. This test assesses your knowledge on reading, sentence structure, arithmetic, and college level algebra. These scores are then used to show your readiness for college. Many community colleges use the Accuplacer Test for placement in college level courses. "It was a great day and we appreciate everyone’s participation," said Career/Tech Department Chairman Jim Williams. "We tested 92 out of 116 (Career/Tech Prep) students and hope to test them all by the end of the year. This is something that people should take seriously because it is an oppurtunity to take advantage of and like the SAT, the more you take it, the more your sores will improve." -AA
