Henry the Navigator

Personal Information Henry the navigator was the prince of Portugal.  Because he fought with extraordinary valor in the Portuguese conquest he was made Duke of Viseu by his father, John I, king of Portugal. He was the fifth child and fourth son of King John I.  He is considered a religious man, a monk, a scholar, and dreamer.  He possessed the instincts of a businessman.  He was born in 1394.  He was the governor of the order of Christ from 1420 to his death in 1460.  He participated in the capture of Ceuta.   Taylor M. - Thompson

Henry’s real name is Dom Henrique.  He was born in 1394.  Henry was one of the sons of the Portuguese king John1. Henry was the prince of Portugal. When Henry and his brothers lead Portuguese army in the conquest of ceuta he learned about the riches in Africa.

Henry was born in 1394. The Moroccan campaign inspired Henry with great desire
to extend his knowledge of Africa. In 1416 he established at Sagres in Portugal, a base for explorations, later adding a navel arsenal and an observatory and a school for the study of geography and navigation. He lived from 1394-1460 and was prince of Portugal. He was the third son of king john the first.

Cape Bojador just below latitude 27degrees North. In 1455 Prince Henry sent the Venetian navigator alvise da Cadamosto on two expeditions. Cadamosto reached the mouth of the Gambia River. Another Cadamosto sailed up the Gambia River. Jennifer B - Calloway
