Leif Ericsson was born in Iceland, around 960 AD, but he is originally a Greenlander.   When he was eight years old he went to live with another man, as most children his age did.  This man’s name was Thyrker, and his father had captured, but not enslaved him.  Thyrker taught Leif to read and write. He also taught Leif all he knew about trade.  Leif Eriksson’s father was a Viking, who was exiled from Norway. Leif Ericsson’s father was known as ‘Eric the Red.’  Leif was the oldest child in his family.  Leif Ericsson was a Viking, like his father.Livie C. - Clark

Leif went to visit Norway. There he became familiar with King Olaf and the facts of Christianity. He finally agreed to let King Olaf baptize him. He decided to spread Christianity when he went back to his home in Greenland.  On his way back to Greenland, he was blown off course.  When he finally reached land, he was somewhere different. In this new land, he found grapes. Later, a man sailed up to this island on a rickety boat.  His name was Bjarni Herolfson.  Leif Ericsson decided to buy Bjarni’s boat and attempt to sail to Greenland once again.

Travel Routes It began in the year 1000 AD in Norway and ended in Greenland.
His route was Iceland to Norway, from Norway to Vinland (also know as Newfoundland).
Vinlane was named Vinland because it had so many grapes, enough to make a vineyard.
Taylor R - Clark

He went from Iceland to Norway, to Greenland to Vinland (now known as Newfoundland). He named this new land Vinland because there were enough grapes to create a Vineyard!  It started in Greenland and ended in Canada.  Leif Ericsson went left from Greenland and then down in a loop, along the coast of Baffin Island, landing right in Canada.  Livie C. - Clark

Leif Ericsson discovered America B, probably somewhere in Iceland. Ericsson found out about a new land to the west and bought a ship for the expedition. He gathered a crew of 35 men and sailed westward. The weather was good throughout the expedition.  Lief and his men followed the outlines of new lands. This is where they landed,1)Helluand,2)Markland,3)Vinland. On the way back they rescued 15 victims of shipwreck. In return, they Ericsson cargo. Jennifer H - Thompson

One of his travel routes went from Greenland to Newfinland Brandon C - Thompson

Results of Expedition The discovery of new plants and new land.  He explored because he was blown of coarse and found the land and so he explored it.  He found land that in the winter it was frost-free and the fodder and food, which normally would need to be kept during the cold harsh winters, was unnecessary here. Taylor R - Clark

This exploration just happened to be accidental.  Leif Eriksson was blown off course and reached a land where he found grapes, wheat and Mau sure (a type of grain). He had found new food, but this land was not very popular.  Only Leif Ericsson’s sister went back to Vinland with a crew of her own, and a boat.  A group of unknown Vinland Indians captured and killed them. He was blown off course in about 1000AD and that is when he discovered the land with lots of grapes and he named it Winland. He discovered America (New World) but it was unknown to Europeans. He also led colonists to Greenland.  Brandon C - Thompson

Importance of Discovery He was first to set foot on than newfound land.  They did not care or know about the discovery.  His sister and kids went to the newfound land called Vinland and were killed by Indians.  Vinland was not very popular.  Christopher Columbus found Vinland after Ericsson, but we still recognize Christopher as the first. Also people did not go to Vinland and settle much before the 1400’s.

Vinland was not very popular. 500 years later. Christopher Columbus came and founded Vinland. He is known for discovering America first, not Eriksson. People did not come and build colonies until around the 1400’s. Livie C. - Clark

Other Important Facts He was the first person on the American land not Columbus.  Columbus didn’t reach America until about 500 years after Eircsson.  Leif was the oldest child in his family.  He did however have a younger sister.
Ericsson inherited his father’s position as leader of the Norse colony in Greenland.
He had been banished from Iceland for three years for fighting with other Norse men.   He died in 1020 A.D.   In Iceland the tradition is when they are young to go and live with another person other then family.  He stayed with a man named Thyrker.  He taught Leif how to speak in Celtic and Russian tongue.  At age twelve he was considered and man.

Leif Eriksson died in 1020. Columbus didn’t reach America until about 500 years after Leif Ericsson.  Leif was the oldest child in his family. He did, however, have a younger sister.  He was banished from Iceland in about three years because he was fighting with Norse men.  Leif Ericsson inherited Eric the Red’s (his father) position as leader of the Norse colony.  Around the ages of 8-12, Leif Ericsson learned Celtic and Russian Tongue.  Leif Ericsson assisted his father on many of his voyages as a Viking.  When sailing along the coast of Baffin Island,  Leif decided to go ahead onto shore.  For some unknown reason, he named the south of this island Markland, which is now known as Labrador.  Most Vikings were originated in Scandinavia, which would make then Scandinavians. Leif kind of went back and for the between Iceland, where he was originally born, to Greenland. So, he is considered an Icelander and a Greenlander, and  a little bit Norwegian, which is inherited from his father, who was, in fact born in Norway.  And there were actually women Vikings! Nowadays people say being a Viking is a man thing, but obviously it isn’t.  Both genders were Vikings.  The name Ericsson can be spelled many different ways such as Erikson, Eriksson, and Ericson.  It is unknown which was the Ericsson spelling. Leif was also spelled Leiv, so the way that is spelled is also unknown.
