2007 AYP Report for Iredell-Statesville Schools

What is AYP?
AYP stands for Adequate Yearly Progress and is part of the Federal "No Child Left Behind" law designed to bring every child in the US up to grade level standards by the year 2012. To reach this goal, students must make adequate yearly progress every year.

How is AYP determined?
AYP is based on student performance on North Carolina's End of Grade (EOG) tests in grades 3-8 and on the 10th grade student performance on the Algebra I and English I End of Course (EOC) tests, the Grade 10 Writing test, and the Grade 10 High School Comprehensive Test or a combination of these tests.  For a school to meet AYP goals, all designated subgroup categories for the school must meet AYP standards. If even one group fails to meet the standard, the entire school is designated as not meeting AYP.

What are those subgroups?
The subgroups measured in AYP are:  All Students, African American, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, Multi-racial, White, Economically Disadvantaged Students, Limited English Proficient Students, and Students with Disabilities.

What does AYP mean to parents?
AYP is a federal standard designed to benefit every student in every subgroup. If a school receives federal Title I funding (which is based on poverty levels), it is subject to the following sanctions by not meeting AYP:
    •  After 2 years of not making AYP in the same subject in the same Title I school, the school district must offer parents of students in that school the opportunity to request their children attend another designated school that has met AYP.  This option is called school choice.  If there are significant numbers of students who wish to  transfer, priority is given to those who did not prove proficient on the EOG in the subject area that did not make AYP at that school.
    •  After 3 years of not making AYP in the same subject, supplemental services are to be offered for students in the school in addition to school choice.  Priority is given to those students who did not meet proficiency.
    •  A Title I school that consistantly does not meet AYP goals would have to be reorganized under new leadership and with new teachers.

Title I schools are Celeste Henkel, East Iredell Elementary, Ebenezer, Harmony, Monticello, N.B. Mills, Northview, Pressly, Scotts, Sharon, Third Creek, Troutman Elementary and Union Grove Elementary. Schools that do not receive Title I funding are not subject to these sanctions. However, the state of North Carolina has chosen to report all AYP standings as part of the ABCs Accountability program.  The ABCs accountability program is a separate North Carolina school improvement program.

How can a school not meet AYP goals and still be a School of Distinction or School of Excellence?
Under North Carolina's ABCs Accountability program, a school in which 80% or more of all students are working at or above grade level are designated a "School of Distinction." A school in which 90% or more of all students are working at or above grade level is designated a "School of Excellence."   A school in which the vast majority of students are at or above grade level may not make its AYP goal if a subgroup of students is not performing at or above grade level.
